Animal Assisted Therapy
at Evolving Minds

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an evidence-based approach where trained clinicians, such as Mental Health Social Workers and Psychologists, incorporate a therapy dog into the therapeutic process.

Clinicians work within the scope of their existing qualifications, with additional specialised training that equips both the clinician and their therapy dog to work effectively as a team in an AAT setting.

Introducing a therapy dog into sessions is more than just having an animal present, it’s a powerful therapeutic tool designed to support clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, stress, anger, and depression.

Meet Sebastian, Our Therapy Dog

We’re proud to introduce Sebastian, an integral member of our Evolving Minds Counselling team. Sebastian is more than just a therapy dog, he’s a gentle, intuitive companion who has been specially trained to provide emotional support in therapeutic settings. His calm presence helps clients feel at ease, creating a safe space where feelings can be explored without fear or judgement.

You’ll often find Sebastian alongside his mum, Charmaine, offering warmth and connection to those who need it most.

Sebastian actively supports the therapeutic process by:

  • Helping clients manage anxiety and reduce feelings of overwhelm.

  • Assisting with emotional regulation during challenging discussions

  • Encouraging engagement and connection in therapy, especially for those who may find traditional talk therapy difficult.

Sebastian has a remarkable ability to sense what clients need, offering warmth and reassurance at just the right moments.

Why Choose Animal Assisted Therapy?

Many clients report feeling more relaxed, open, and connected when a therapy dog is present, leading to:

  • Deeper emotional exploration

  • Improved mental health outcomes

  • A greater sense of trust and security within the therapeutic relationship

It’s important to note Animal Assisted Therapy is not an “alternative” or “complementary” therapy. Instead, it is an integrated, evidence-based practice that works alongside traditional therapeutic techniques, enhancing their effectiveness and making therapy more accessible for many people.
