Understanding Domestic Violence

At Evolving Minds Counselling, we provide a safe and compassionate space for those impacted by domestic violence to begin their healing journey.

Domestic violence is a pattern of threatening, violent, or controlling behaviour designed to create fear and exert power. It often alternates between calm periods and episodes of tension and abuse. Abusers may apologise, make promises to change, or shift blame, creating a cycle that is confusing, exhausting, and harmful for victims and their children.

The clinicians at Evolving Minds have completed specialist training in domestic and family violence and collaborates with agencies where possible to ensure comprehensive support. We also offer tailored care for children and adolescents affected by domestic violence, helping them process their experiences and emotions in a safe and understanding environment.

Types of Abuse

Abusive behaviour can take many forms, including:

  • Emotional abuse: Manipulation, intimidation, and verbal attacks

  • Financial abuse: Controlling or restricting access to money

  • Physical abuse: Hitting, slapping, or other physical harm

  • Psychological abuse: Gaslighting and mind games

  • Sexual abuse: Non-consensual sexual acts

  • Social abuse: Isolating the victim from friends and family

  • Spiritual abuse: Undermining or controlling a person’s beliefs

Domestic violence often results in complex trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. At Evolving Minds Counselling, we provide trauma-informed care to help survivors process their experiences, understand their emotions, and begin their journey toward emotional healing and recovery.
