Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy is a respectful and collaborative approach to counselling that helps people explore how the stories they tell about themselves shape the way they see their lives, their relationships, and their future.

This evidence-informed therapy supports individuals, couples, and families to separate themselves from their problems, rather than seeing the problem as part of who they are.

Through conversation, reflection, and curiosity, clients are encouraged to examine dominant stories (often shaped by past experiences, trauma, or cultural expectations) and re-author their narrative in a way that aligns more closely with their strengths, values, and hopes.

Narrative Therapy is effective for a wide range of presentations, including:
• Depression and anxiety
• Trauma and complex life experiences
• Grief and loss
• Identity and cultural challenges
• Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs
• Relationship difficulties and family conflict
• Life transitions (e.g. separation, relocation, coming out, retirement)

This approach is particularly helpful for individuals who feel overwhelmed by inner self-criticism, who have experienced disempowering relationships or systems, or who are navigating questions of meaning, identity, and belonging.

At Evolving Minds Counselling, Narrative Therapy may be used on its own or integrated with other evidence-based approaches, depending on your goals. Our therapists work alongside you to help uncover stories of resilience, agency, and possibility, even in the face of pain or challenge.

If you or someone you love is feeling stuck, defined by the past, or unsure how to move forward, Narrative Therapy may offer a new and empowering path.
